根據 Google 的公告，Android 4.4 KitKat 將可以讓使用者自訂要使用的簡訊程式。

Google 15 日宣布公開原來未開放的 SMS API，讓使用者可以自行選擇預設的簡訊程式，這將讓 Android 4.4 KitKat 的簡訊功能有更高的自訂性。

在開發之前，程式開發者都是透過未來公開的 API 來達成讀取和發送簡訊的功能，不過在未取得 root 權限的情況下無法設為預設的簡訊程式。而 Google 並不鼓勵這種行為，因為隱藏的 API 隨時可能改變或是移除，而新裝置也不會測試對它們的相容性。

因此 Google 決定從 Android 4.4 KitKat 開始，公開現行的 SMS API，讓程式開發者可以擁有一致而且相容的 SMS API 使用，使得第三方簡訊程式的功能更穩定。而 Google 也釋出了預設簡訊程式的功能，讓使用者可以自行選擇喜好的簡訊程式。
